Greek drama/romance film written and directed by Christoforos Papakaliatis.
Against the backdrop of restless Athens, Greece, three stories of intercultural romance intertwine, depicting the turmoil and the inner sadness of a country trapped in a ceaseless socio-economic collapse. Farris, a Syrian refugee, saves Daphne, an idealist college student. Then, Yorgos (Christoforos Papakaliatis), an unhappily married, pill-popping sales manager, has an unexpected affair with Elise (Andrea Osvárt), a frigidly beautiful Scandinavian corporate executive. Finally, Maria, a wistful Greek housewife whose family is struggling to keep afloat, has a chance encounter with grizzled Sebastian (J. K. Simmons), who offers her a second chance in love. In the end, can love transcend all barriers?

1. Worlds Apart (2015) opening set a new record in the Greek market, being the highest-grossing film since 2009, notably surpassing by a long margin the long-awaited blockbuster 2015 releases Star Wars: Η δύναμη ξυπνάει (2015) and Spectre (2015).
2. Despite being a major success, Christoforos Papakaliatis’ second directorial effort, received heavy criticism for the unrealistic portrayal of the Neo-nazi party of “Golden Dawn” (now condemned as a criminal organization by the Greek Justice). The scene where the extremists raid a camp of immigrants is not based on nor inspired by any true events.
3. The film features the appearance of Dimitris Lignadis in a small but important role of a right-wing extremist. A prominent actor, stage director, and LGBTQ+ activist, Lignadis shocked Greece when he was arrested and charged with serial rape of young boys. At the time of his arrest, he was serving as the Artistic Director of the National Theater of Greece
4. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote: “Worlds Apart doesn’t manage to transcend the forced and familiar-feeling aspects of its multipart narrative, but it does offer an evocative portrait of its troubled milieu, and one of its segments, at least, has genuine emotional resonance.”
5. The film stars the celebrated American actor J.K. Simmons, a year after his Academy Award-winning performance in “Whiplash” (2014).
